Common Cause of Fire- Dryer Vents
Here at SERVPRO of Portsmouth we have restored many homes and commercial businesses from fires that started from different sources. Many people don’t realize that dirty dryer vents make up an average of 17,000 reported fires in the United States every year. The sad fact is, most of these fires would not have occurred if the dryer vents had been properly cleaned.
Here are some tips to help you determine if your dryer vent is overdue for a cleaning:
- You notice a musty/moldy smell in your newly dried clothes.
- You notice a larger amount of lint build up in the lint trap.
- You see any debris outside of the vent opening.
- The laundry room and newly dried clothes are hotter than usual.
The good news is dryer vent fires are easily preventable. The main thing to remember is to keep your dryer & vent as lint-free as possible. Clean your lint trap after EVERY load. Use a lint brush to catch any excess lint around the trap. It is recommended that you call a professional out for service/cleaning every 1-3 years. Never leave your house while you are running the dryer.
