National Fireworks Safety Month

7/3/2019 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Portsmouth, we would like to wish our clients, partners & friends a very happy & safe 4th of July holiday weekend. July is National Fireworks Safety Month, and here are some helpful tips you can follow to keep your family safe this weekend:

Only set off fireworks in an open area, steering clear of trees, vehicles, buildings and people. Never set fireworks off indoors and point them in the opposite direction of bystanders.  It’s also a good idea to wear safety goggles & keep a fire extinguisher close by. Have a bucket of water handy to dispose of previously lit fireworks. Soak them for a few hours after they have been lit.

Do not set off fireworks with pets around. The noise frightens them, and they have the potential to cause serious injuries to your furry friends. Make sure your pets have a microchip and identification tags, so if they do run away you are able to find them.

Do not allow children access to fireworks. Do not operate fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Don’t underestimate the dangers of sparklers- they have the potential to cause serious burns and are highly flammable so can quickly ignite clothing. Sparkler injuries make up 25% of firework-related emergency room visits every year.

Finally, make sure to check your local laws on setting off fireworks. Certain fireworks might not be permitted in your area. The 4th of July is a great time to celebrate with your family and following these tips will ensure it is a safe one as well.
